PRECEPTS FROM THE KING JAMES BIBLE

. . . . . . . . . . . . .What of “APPEARANCES?”

Summary:

...The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart. He is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

...As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised (to seek righteousness not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law); only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Christ (for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness). For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.

...We walk by faith, not by sight.

...For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.

...If I (Paul) yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. I would they were even cut off which trouble you. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

...All that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. For all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they love the praise of men more than the praise of God.

...No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see (with the eyes of your understanding); and that they which see (after the outward appearance) might be made blind. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

...Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he (Jesus Christ at his second coming) shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself (Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.), even as he is pure, 1Jn0302,03.

Further reading:

(1) The Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart, 1Sm1617.

(2) He is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God, Rom0228.

(3) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever, 1Jn0215-17.

(4) But all their works they do for to be seen of men (for they love the praise of men more than the praise of God, Jhn1243): they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted, Mat2305-12.

(5) Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees (And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. Mrk0709.) they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue: For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God, Jhn1242,43.

(6) Jesus said, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctines the commandments of men... Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition, Mrk0706-09.

(7) As many as desire to make a fair shew in the flesh, they constrain you to be circumcised (to seek righteousness not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law, Rom0931); only lest they should suffer persecution for the cross of Chris (for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, 1Co0118). For neither they themselves who are circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature ( For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. Jhn0117). And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God, Gal0612-16.

(8) Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus (by whom we have now received the atonement, Rom0511), Rom0319-26.

(9) And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. I would they were even cut off which trouble you. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, Gal0511-14.

(10) No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him, Jhn0118. Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see (with the eyes of your understanding, Eph0118: For we walk by faith, not by sight, 2Co0507); and that they which see (outward appearance, 1Sm1607) might be made blind. And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also? Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth, Jhn0939-41.

(11) For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be, Gal0503-10.

(12) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit (even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you, [my words abide in you, Jhn1507], Jhn1417). For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh (the things that are of the world, 1Co0733); but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you, Rom0801-08.

(13) Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness (if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; Rom0424.). But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you (if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2Co0517). Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage (under the elements of the world, Gal0403) again to fear (death, Heb0215); but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him (Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, 2Tm0312), that we may be also glorified together, Rom0808-17.

(14) It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life, Jhn0663. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him, Jhn0334-36.

(15) Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified, Gal0216. (Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Rom0322-26.)

(16) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them, Eph0208-10. (For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without [good] works is dead also. Jas0226.)(Doth he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I trow not. So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do. Luk1709,10.)

(17) For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, Rom1013-18. If they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them, Isa0820.

(18) He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand, Jhn0333-35. (But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Mat0404.)(Jesus answered and said unto him [Judas, not Iscariot], If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. Jhn1423,24.)

(19) But what I (Paul) do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. (For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God. Jhn1243.) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works, 2Co1112-15.

(20) And when Jesus was demanded of the Pharisees (traditionalists', Mrk0709), when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation (outward shew, Luk1720m): Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you (Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 1Co0316.). And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day, Luk1720-24.

(21) Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure, 1Jn0302,03. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord, 1Co1553-58.

(22) For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. Rom0824,25.
